Is global digitisation outstripping the development of cyber-security systems?

The landscape of global industrial cyber-security systems, on the whole, is more conservative than the landscape of cyber-security systems on the whole and is developing rather slowly.

As per the results of an IDC study carried out together with Orange Business Services at the beginning of 2018, there has been an unprecedented demand for corporate cyber-security services in Russia within the financial sector, industry and power engineering.
A report entitled ‘Cyber-security of industrial automation systems in 2018’ (IA PAC together with Kaspersky Lab) mentions that most companies consider the security of industrial automation and control systems to be one of their key priorities. The landscape of global industrial cyber-security systems, on the whole, is more conservative than the landscape of cyber-security systems on the whole and is developing rather slowly.

Another factor causing the alarming tendency of a rise in the number of hacks into industry IT systems is the deep penetration of high technologies into the industry sector, which increases the number of potential attack routes. For example – vulnerabilities of communication networks can affect the whole ecosystem of devices connected to the Internet, including industrial ones, in the GSM systems for monitoring gas pipelines. The threats include the rather low-level of qualification of IT-specialists on the factory floor when it comes to preventing and implementing threat control from a relatively small number of incidents and the prevailing opinion that closed-loop systems (without access to the global network) are virtually risk-free.
