At Stellantis’ Betim Automotive Plant in Brazil, Comau implemented advanced automation solutions. This was part of a significant redesign effort for the Fiat Pulse and Fiat Fastback SUVs. The upgrade included integrating 74 automatic and 10 manual stations, focusing on precision in underbody and side welding, and efficiently catering to different SUV models on the same production line.
Comau utilized virtual commissioning and process simulation to optimize welding line design, foresee and address robot sequencing issues, and identify process improvements, resulting in efficient use of existing plant equipment.
The Industry 4.0 initiative incorporates IO-Link technology to monitor water and compressed air supplies, enabling real-time data analysis, issue detection, remote configuration, and PLC software integration for maintenance optimization. The manufacturing line prioritizes safety and flexibility, reducing tool changes, establishing time and overall sustainability, and facilitating efficient and cost-effective management of multi-model manufacturing needs.
“Beyond addressing the inherent automation challenges, the Comau team was quick to propose and integrate key technologies to meet our quality and cycle-time objectives. This project, which is part of our Industry 4.0 strategy, has given us more agility and the flexibility to manufacture different versions and other models on the same lines,” was being said by Glauber Fullana, Manufacturing Vice President for Stellantis South America.
Laerte Scarpitta, Comau Leader for the Americas, added further by saying, “the successful launch of this complex project is proof of Comau’s strong commitment to excellence and technological innovation. Our turn-key manufacturing solution allows Stellantisto to enhance an existing platform to fully meet its near-term productivity, quality, and market volume goals, all while ensuring the possibility for future expansion as needed.”
With 50 years of expertise in automation and digitalization, Comau, a global leader, used its extensive experience and local presence to meet the project’s challenging requirements and expand the Brazilian industry.
